What this site does not do
- It sets no cookies.
- It uses no analytics or tracking services, no advertising and no social-media plugins.
- It loads nothing from other servers. Fonts and scripts are hosted on this webspace.
- It does not build visitor profiles or sell visitor data. The hosting provider processes technical data to deliver and secure this website, as described below.
Hosting and server logs
The website is hosted by IONOS SE, Elgendorfer Str. 57, 56410 Montabaur, Germany, within the EU.
Like every web server, it records technical access data when a page is requested: IP address (anonymised in the access logs according to IONOS), date and time, the page requested, the referring page, browser and operating system (user agent), and the status of the response. This is needed to deliver the site and to keep it secure. The legal basis is the legitimate interest in a working and secure website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). IONOS documents retention of access logs for up to eight weeks. You can learn more about their policies under https://www.ionos.de/.
Visitor counter
To know roughly how many people visit, the site counts unique visitors per day with its own small script, running on this server. No cookie is set and nothing is stored on your device.
To avoid counting the same visitor twice on one day, the script calculates a SHA-256 hash of a fixed salt, the current calendar date in Europe/Vienna, your IP address and your user agent. The IP address and user agent are not written to the counter files. These hashes are pseudonymous identifiers. On the first request on a later day, the script saves the number of identifiers for each previous day as an aggregate daily total and deletes the corresponding identifier files. If there are no further requests, cleanup is delayed until the next request. Only the current day’s hashes and historical daily totals remain after successful cleanup. The counter excludes some recognisable automated visitors and therefore provides an approximate count, not an exact count of individuals.
The legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding how much the site is read (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can object at any time by writing to the address above.
Settings in your browser
The site uses - for your convenience - your browser’s local storage to remember settings you made for this site (e.g. day/night mode, text size, last-read chapter, text and audio language preferences, and recording choices). The stored values remain on your device until you clear them in your browser settings; the local-storage records are not uploaded. Language and recording selections can also appear in page URLs, and requests for the selected text and audio files are processed by the hosting provider.
If you write an email, your address and message are used to handle your enquiry. The email provider IONOS processes them to deliver and store the correspondence. They may be deleted when the conversation is finished, unless they need to be kept for legal reasons.
Your rights
You have the right to access the data stored about you, and to have it corrected, deleted or restricted, the right to data portability, and the right to object to processing (Art. 15–21 GDPR). To use these rights, write to the address above.
You may also lodge a complaint with the Austrian Data Protection Authority (Datenschutzbehörde), Barichgasse 40–42, 1030 Vienna, dsb.gv.at.
